In the Beginning…
If God created the heavens and the earth, why are His followers so hell-bent on destroying it?
Even if you’ve never opened a Bible, you’ve probably heard how it begins. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This earth it mentions is our earth, the planet that orbits a perfect distance from a star that we know as “the sun” to sustain life. This is also the same earth teeming with living plants that convert harmful carbon dioxide into life-sustaining oxygen for animals and people. It’s a place where daffodils and columbine grow with an astonishingly consistent 60% and 72% angle between petals. It’s a place where virtually every living thing produces more living things. In short, the earth is a miraculous place.
Yet, decades of human consumption and waste threaten the very existence of this creation. Decades ago, we were warned of holes in the ozone layer — that is, a layer of protective gasses that provides sunscreen to the planet. With this layer gone, it was theorized that the sun’s heat would increase the temperature of the planet and destabilize the miracle that is nature.
Today, years after these warnings, this is exactly what’s happening. Hurricanes and tornados destroy with increasing frequency and fury. Earthquakes are more common than ever, periodically triggering tsunamis…
