The Case for Legacy Media
As the “mainstream” media fawn all over a convict racist, rapist President-elect, I am sickened. I’ve seen many writers suggesting that legacy media needs to die, to be replaced by virtual media like Medium, Substack, BlueSky, and other platforms that aren’t beholden to strong monied interests. While an intriguing idea, buoyed by better balanced reporting by citizen journalists as compared to paid pundits, I believe the peril of abandoning the MSM to the Reich cannot be understated.
It’s no secret that Fox News, Newsmax, OAN, and Epoch are propaganda outlets serving the Reich. MSNBC and CNN used to at least lean a little towards the center, but it seems both have moved strongly towards the right and are becoming more in alignment with the whims of corporate overlords. Remember when WaPO and the NYT had a shred of integrity? Clearly, that’s ancient history now, discarded in favor of profits over the good of the people.
We also cannot look away from the decimation of Xitter, reduced to a cesspool of hate and bile designed to influence, manipulate, and damage “other people” to the glory of one particular billionaire. Facebook has also been overrun by foreign interests to influence and manipulate, and as to Truth Social? Well, that is just the cruelest of irony.
It seems all media is now in the hands of the Reich. Balance is gone. Honesty is strongly discouraged. Criminality is rewarded as righteousness. Truth is “fake news”. Lies are the new normal. It’s like someone took Orwell’s “1984” and said “yeah, let’s do that.”
It’s not even 100 years since the fall of the last Reich. MUST WE DO THIS AGAIN?
Remember when it was a Good Thing to be honestly informed? I remember watching Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, and Barbara Walters report the news as honestly as they possibly could. It wasn’t pretty; Walter Cronkite cried when reporting the death of JFK. Dan put himself in harms way in Vietnam and other fields of conflict, which is far more than anyone can claim for the felon-elect. Peter gave us a stirring account of the fall of the Berlin wall. And Walters? What can you say about Babs but that she was unflinching and uncompromising when getting people to face their demons.
